Lā‘au Lapa‘au: Healing Through Plants and Spirit
Lā‘au lapa‘au is the traditional Hawaiian system of healing that uses plants, prayer (pule), and spiritual connection to restore balance (pono) in the body and mind. It was practiced by kāhuna lā‘au lapa‘au, specially trained healers who studied for years under a kumu (teacher) before treating others.
Key Values to Remember
- Aloha ‘āina – love and respect for the land that provides the medicine
- Pono – doing things in the right way, with right intention
- Kapu – sacred protocols, such as asking permission (mahalo/pule) before harvesting a plant
- Mana – the spiritual energy within plants, people, and place
In old Hawai‘i, healing was never just physical. A kahuna would consider a person's relationships, emotional state, and spiritual standing before treating an illness. Today, many families on Kaua‘i still pass down small pieces of this knowledge — a grandmother's noni poultice, an uncle's mamaki tea for stomach troubles.
Important Kapu (Protocol) Before Harvesting
- Ask the plant's permission with a simple pule or quiet moment of intention
- Take only what you need
- Leave an offering or word of thanks (often a pule or small gift like a pebble)
- Never harvest when angry or in a bad state of mind — your mana affects the medicine
We'll go deeper into harvesting protocol in Section 3.
