How to Gather Lā‘au the Right Way

Before You Harvest

  • Pause and set your intention — approach with a calm, respectful mindset
  • Offer a simple pule or words of gratitude, asking the plant's permission
  • Consider the time of day and the plant's health — don't take from a struggling plant

While Harvesting

  • Take only what you need for the person you are helping
  • Use clean hands and tools
  • Be mindful of your steps — don't trample surrounding plants

Safety First

  • Never use a plant you cannot positively identify
  • Start with small amounts to check for allergic reaction
  • Pregnant or nursing individuals, keiki, and those with chronic conditions should consult both a knowledgeable practitioner and a doctor before use
  • Lā‘au lapa‘au should complement, not replace, medical treatment for serious conditions

Learning from a Kumu

True lā‘au lapa‘au knowledge is traditionally passed down through relationship and mentorship, not just books or classes. If this course sparks your interest, seek out a respected kumu or cultural practitioner in our Kaua‘i community who can guide you further and share deeper protocols (like specific pule) appropriately.
